Cross-Country at a Glance

Cross-country moves cover 1,200 to 3,200+ miles across all 50 states, with transit windows of 7 to 21 business days depending on route and booking type. Safebound runs 53-foot tractor trailers on every route, with shuttle service available where access is restricted.

Pricing is set as a binding or flat rate with a 400 cubic foot minimum on every booking. Cross-country moves should be booked 8 to 12 weeks ahead to lock in your pickup window and quoted price.

Many companies advertising cross-country rates take large deposits upfront and assign your move to a carrier you never vetted. If the job is misquoted, you have no recourse once loading day arrives.

Safebound Moving & Storage (USDOT 2900155) is a licensed motor carrier running cross-country moves as part of our long-distance moving service. Every coast-to-coast booking is managed end-to-end under our contract and USDOT authority. We offer long-distance moving with transparent pricing options, including binding estimates, flat-rate pricing, dedicated trucks, and customized solutions tailored to your move. How Much Does a Cross-Country Move Cost?

Binding estimate: a written quote that locks your price to the agreed inventory and scope of work before loading. The final bill cannot exceed it unless you add items or services after signing.

Cross-country moves use binding or flat-rate pricing based on shipment volume, distance, and services requested. Volume is measured in cubic feet during a visual or video inventory walk-through before the quote is issued. Flat-rate pricing covers the move itself; packing materials are quoted separately on top.

The 400 cubic foot minimum applies on every long-distance booking. See the pricing methodology and BOL mechanics on the long-distance movers page.

Distance 2-Bedroom 3-Bedroom 4-Bedroom
1,200–1,600 miles $3,800–$5,800 $7,500–$9,500 $9,800+
1,600–2,000 miles $4,500–$6,500 $6,000–$8,500 $10,000+
2,000–2,800 miles $5,500–$8,000 $8,000–$12,500 $12,000+
2,800+ miles $5,500–$8,000 $8,500–$12,500 $13,500+

Seasonal note: Ranges above reflect off-peak bookings (October through April). Seasonality and availability can affect pricing by approximately 15% to 25%. For why peak-season quotes run so much higher, see Why Moving Quotes Cost 30% More in Peak Season.

Example Scenario: 3BR Cross-Country With Shuttle

Hypothetical. A 3-bedroom home ships 2,400 miles to a California HOA community that prohibits 53-foot trailers. Measured inventory: 1,400 cubic feet. A shuttle transfers the shipment from the trailer staging point to the delivery address. Approximately $10,600+. Transit: 5 to 21 business days depending on booking type.

Example Scenario: 4BR Coast-to-Coast Dedicated

Hypothetical. A 4-bedroom home ships 2,900 miles to Los Angeles on a dedicated truck. Measured inventory: 2,000 cubic feet. Full-service packing. No shuttle. Approximately $13,800+. Transit: 8 to 12 business days.

Why Dedicated Trucks Matter Most on Cross-Country Moves

A dedicated truck on a cross-country move is the difference between a 7-to-14-day delivery window and a 21-day one. Safebound recommends dedicated on most full-home cross-country bookings, regardless of cubic footage, if cost is not a concern.

On a 500-mile move, a consolidated 5-to-12-day window is manageable. On a 2,800-mile move, a consolidated 14-to-21-day window is the difference between moving into your new home and waiting two weeks for the truck.

Booking type How it works Typical delivery window Cost Best for
Dedicated truck Entire truck committed to your shipment 7 to 14 business days 25% to 40% higher Full-home moves, tight delivery windows, valuable shipments
Consolidated load Shared with other shipments heading to the same region 14 to 21 business days Lower flat rate Smaller shipments under 1,200 cft, flexible dates

What this means for you: For a full-home cross-country move, a dedicated truck cuts your delivery window roughly in half and keeps the same crew on your shipment from pickup to delivery.

Tractor Trailer Access and When You Need a Shuttle

Tractor trailer: a 53-foot commercial rig, the standard for cross-country long-haul. Holds up to 4,200 cubic feet (roughly a full 5-bedroom home plus extras).

Shuttle: a smaller truck used to transfer your shipment between the 53-foot trailer and your address when the trailer cannot access the origin or destination directly.

A 53-foot trailer needs a straight run of 75 to 100 feet from the public road to the front door to load and unload safely. Most suburban and rural addresses accommodate this without issue. Urban and specialty destinations do not.

Destinations Where Tractor Trailer Access Is Commonly Restricte

  • Pacific Northwest: narrow neighborhood streets in Seattle and Portland, tight turns in Oregon hill country
  • Coastal California: HOA communities that prohibit commercial vehicles, weight-restricted private roads
  • Mountain towns in Colorado, Utah, Nevada: switchback roads, weight limits on forest service roads
  • Carolinas: rural gravel access, low bridges, unpaved drives
  • Older urban neighborhoods: narrow streets, overhanging trees, low utility lines

When access is restricted, the move uses a shuttle. A smaller truck moves items between your address and a nearby staging point where the 53-foot trailer can park.

Shuttles add time and cost. Safebound identifies shuttle requirements during the visual inventory walk-through and includes shuttle cost in the binding or flat-rate quote before loading, so the price does not change at delivery.

Cross-Country Corridors and Delivery Windows

Delivery windows vary by corridor and by whether you book a dedicated truck or a consolidated load. Dedicated runs at the faster end of each range. Consolidated runs at the longer end because the truck routes through multiple destinations. For a route-by-route look at typical timelines, see How Long Does a Long-Distance Move Take.

Southeast to Mountain West (1,800 to 2,400 miles)

Destinations include Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Albuquerque. Dedicated transit: 6 to 12 business days. Consolidated: 12 to 18 business days.

Pacific Northwest

Southeast to Pacific Northwest (2,800 to 3,200 miles)

Destinations include Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Spokane. Dedicated transit: 7 to 14 business days. Consolidated: 14 to 28 business days on slower weeks.

Northern California

Southeast to Northern California (2,800 to 3,000 miles)

Destinations include San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, Oakland. Dedicated transit: 7 to 14 business days. Consolidated: 14 to 28 business days on slower weeks.

Southern California

Southeast to Southern California (2,500 to 2,800 miles)

Destinations include Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, Riverside. Dedicated transit: 7 to 12 business days. Consolidated: 12 to 21 business days.

Corridor Miles Dedicated Consolidated
Northeast / Mid-Atlantic 1,200–1,800 Up to 4 business days Up to 17 business days
Mountain West 1,800–2,400 Up to 5 business days Up to 19 business days
Pacific Northwest 2,400–3,000 Up to 6 business days Up to 21 business days
Coast-to-coast 3,000–3,400 Up to 7 business days Up to 23 business days

These transit windows are estimates. Actual delivery windows will vary based on route, season, and booking type, and are confirmed in writing on the Bill of Lading before loading.

Bottom line: Pickup is scheduled to a specific date. Delivery is a range in the Bill of Lading. Your coordinator narrows that range to a 24-to-48 hour notice before the truck arrives.

Book a Licensed Carrier, Not a Broker

Online lead aggregators sell your contact information to multiple companies, and most of the calls you receive back will be from brokers. A broker takes your deposit and assigns the job to a carrier you have never vetted. A carrier owns the trucks and employs the crew that drives your furniture to the destination.

Three signs you are talking to a broker: the quote lists service fees, dispatch fees, or a booking deposit above 15% of the total price; the company cannot name the specific driver or crew lead who will handle your move; and the business has no physical address, no Google Business Profile, or only a cell phone as a contact number.

Verify any mover at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. The listing shows whether the company holds Carrier or Broker authority for household goods. Safebound operates under USDOT 2900155 with active Carrier authority and a 4.9-star Google Business Profile across 2,401 reviews.

For the full carrier-versus-broker comparison and red flags to watch for, see the long-distance movers page.

The 12-Week Cross-Country Planning Timeline

A cross-country move should be booked 12 weeks ahead of pickup. Every critical milestone works backward from there, and the margin to recover from a missed step is thin. For a fuller walk-through of cross-country move planning, see Best Cross Country Movers: 2026 Complete Guide.

Weeks out What happens
12 to 10 Visual or video inventory walk-through, cubic footage locked, binding estimate or flat-rate quote issued, booking deposit paid
10 to 8 Valuation coverage elected, auto transport booked if shipping a vehicle, shuttle requirements confirmed for restricted-access destinations
8 to 4 Packing decisions finalized, utilities scheduled at both ends, address changes filed with USPS, banks, and insurance
4 to 1 Final inventory walk-through, pickup date confirmed to a specific day, Bill of Lading reviewed before loading
Move week Crew arrives on confirmed date, BOL signed at the truck, delivery window confirmed in writing

If your move-out and move-in dates do not align, Safebound operates a 100,000-square-foot climate-controlled storage facility. Items are stored in wooden vaults at $0.40 to $0.75 per cubic foot for any term length.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a cross-country move cost?

Cross-country moves use binding or flat-rate pricing. Ranges run from $3,800 for a 2-bedroom moving 1,200–1,600 miles up to $13,500+ for a 4-bedroom moving 2,800+ miles. Pricing is driven by cubic footage, distance, and services, with a 400 cubic foot minimum.

What is a shuttle and when is one needed?

A shuttle is a smaller truck used to move your shipment between your address and the 53-foot tractor trailer when the trailer cannot access the origin or destination directly. Shuttles are commonly required for HOA communities that prohibit commercial vehicles, narrow urban streets, mountain towns with weight-restricted private roads, and rural destinations with gravel access or low bridges. Safebound identifies shuttle requirements during the inventory walk-through and includes the cost in the binding or flat-rate quote.

Dedicated or consolidated for cross-country?

Dedicated for full-home moves, shipments over 1,500 cubic feet, or any delivery window tighter than 10 business days. Consolidated for shipments under 1,200 cubic feet and flexible dates. Dedicated runs 25% to 40% higher but cuts the delivery window roughly in half.

How long does a cross-country move take?

Dedicated-truck windows run 7 to 14 business days coast-to-coast. Consolidated runs 14 to 28 business days on the same routes during slower weeks. Shorter cross-country corridors (Northeast, Midwest) run faster: 4 to 14 business days depending on booking type.

How do I verify a cross-country mover?

Search the USDOT number at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. The Operating Authority section shows Carrier or Broker authority. Only a carrier can guarantee that the company you hired is the company on your truck. Safebound holds USDOT 2900155 and MC 975408 with Carrier authority.

How far in advance should I book?

Book 12 weeks ahead of pickup, and no less than 10 weeks during peak season (May through September). Cross-country trucks run on fixed weekly schedules that fill first on the West Coast lanes. The binding estimate needs to be locked at least 3 weeks before pickup to protect the quoted price.

What happens if my destination is not ready when the truck arrives?

Safebound offers climate-controlled storage at its 100,000-square-foot facility. Items are stored in wooden vaults at $0.40 to $0.75 per cubic foot for any term length. Coordinate your delivery window at booking to avoid storage costs on fixed-schedule cross-country routes.

Is Safebound licensed for cross-country moves?

Yes. Safebound holds USDOT 2900155 and MC 975408 issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, authorizing cross-country moves to all 50 states. We also hold Florida license IM2839. Verify at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov or fdacs.gov.

Frequently Asked Questions

Don't let unanswered questions hold you back. Let's extinguish those burning questions!

Is my move price guaranteed?

In many cases, yes. Your move price can be guaranteed if your estimate is based on accurate information and the services do not change. Safebound Moving & Storage offers flat-rate and binding estimates designed to give you a clear, predictable cost for your move so you know what to expect before moving day.

A guaranteed price depends on the details provided during the quoting process, including the inventory list, pickup and delivery locations, access conditions, and any additional services such as packing or storage. When this information is correct and the scope of the move stays the same, the price listed on your estimate will not change.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Safebound Moving & Storage is fully licensed and insured to perform both local and long-distance moving services. We operate in compliance with state and federal regulations, including registration with the U.S. Department of Transportation for interstate moves. Our licensing allows us to legally transport household goods across state lines and ensures we meet the required safety, insurance, and operating standards for professional moving companies.

In addition to our licensing, we carry the proper insurance coverage to protect your belongings while they are in our care. All moves include basic valuation coverage as required by law, and we also offer additional coverage options for customers who want extra protection for high-value items. Our team will explain these options during the estimate so you can choose the level of protection that best fits your move.

Being licensed and insured is one of the most important things to verify when hiring a moving company, especially for long-distance relocations. Working with a properly registered carrier helps ensure accountability, transparent pricing, and professional handling of your shipment from pickup through delivery.

What services are included in my flat fee?

Our flat-rate pricing is designed to give you a clear, all-inclusive cost for your move with no surprises on moving day. When you receive a flat-fee quote from Safebound Moving & Storage, it is based on the inventory, distance, and services discussed during your estimate, and it includes the labor, transportation, and standard moving materials needed to complete your move.

In most cases, the flat fee includes loading and unloading, transportation, basic furniture protection with padded moving blankets and shrink wrap, disassembly and reassembly of standard furniture, and placement of items in your new home according to your instructions. We also include fuel, mileage, and the use of our moving truck and equipment, so you do not have to worry about hidden charges being added later.

If packing services are included in your quote, the flat fee will also cover the agreed-upon packing labor and materials. If storage is part of the move, the estimate will outline the storage period and any applicable fees in advance so you know exactly what is included.

Because every move is different, your flat fee only covers the services listed on your estimate. Additional items, extra packing, long carries, shuttle service, or changes to the inventory may affect the final price, which is why we take time during the quoting process to make sure your estimate is as accurate as possible. Our goal is to provide straightforward pricing so you know exactly what to expect before your move begins.

Do you handle fragile or valuable items?

Yes. Safebound Moving & Storage has extensive experience handling fragile, high-value, and specialty items, and we take extra precautions to ensure they are packed, transported, and delivered safely. Our crews are trained to properly protect delicate belongings such as glassware, artwork, antiques, mirrors, electronics, marble, sculptures, and other items that require careful handling.

We use professional packing materials including padded moving blankets, shrink wrap, custom boxes, and specialty cartons designed for dishes, TVs, artwork, and other sensitive items. When needed, we can also provide custom crating for especially valuable or oversized pieces to give them additional protection during transport.

For customers with high-value furniture or designer pieces, our team follows detailed packing and loading procedures to prevent damage during both local and long-distance moves. Each item is carefully wrapped, labeled, and secured in the truck to minimize shifting while in transit.

If you have items that you are particularly concerned about, we recommend letting us know in advance so we can plan the proper materials, crew size, and equipment for your move. Our goal is to make sure every item — from everyday household goods to your most valuable possessions — arrives in the same condition it left.

Do you offer long-distance moving?

Yes, Safebound Moving & Storage provides professional long-distance moving services throughout Florida and across the United States. Whether you are relocating to a neighboring state or moving across the country, our team is equipped to handle every aspect of your move from start to finish.

Long-distance moves require careful planning, accurate scheduling, and experienced crews. We coordinate packing, loading, transportation, storage (if needed), and delivery to ensure your belongings arrive safely and on time. Our team works with you to create a clear moving plan so you know what to expect at every step of the process.

We regularly handle moves between Florida and major destinations such as Georgia, Texas, the Carolinas, the Northeast, and the Midwest, as well as cross-country relocations. Our trucks, equipment, and trained movers are prepared for both small apartment moves and large household relocations. If you need temporary storage during your long-distance move, we also offer secure, climate-controlled storage at our facility until you are ready for delivery.

When you request a quote, we will review the distance, inventory, timeline, and any special requirements to provide an accurate estimate and a realistic delivery window. Our goal is to make your long-distance move as smooth, organized, and stress-free as possible.
